Jamaica Overview June 29, 2009

Everyone knows Jamaica as the home of Bob Marley and as the honeymoon capital of the Caribbean, but there’s more to it than just reggae and romance! The third largest island in the Caribbean has everything – wonderful white-sand beaches, magnificent blue mountains, waterfalls, wildlife, grand old plantations and great coffee.

Jamaica is also famous for its outstanding all-inclusive resorts, most of which are virtually self-contained beachfront vacation villages with an abundant array of included amenities and dining options. Jamaica hotels come in all shapes and sizes from ultra-exclusive, award-winning resorts with gourmet cuisine, stunning pool-scapes and impeccable accommodations and service to lively hotels with high-energy “entertainment staffs” that will keep you hopping all day and night. You’ll find Jamaica hotels that cater to couples only; some that are designed with families and children in mind; and some that welcome all ages to just kick back and relax on the beach with a good book and an umbrella drink!

The main beach resort areas are Montego Bay, also known as Mo’Bay, Jamaica’s second largest city; Negril, boasting one of the longest beaches in the country with all the water sports you can imagine; Ocho Rios (Ochi), on the north shore, where you’ll find “the real Jamaica’ with picturesque fishing villages providing quieter retreats; and the South Coast offers a secluded and romantic hideaway.

The beautiful scenery, the wide variety of hotel choices, the friendly spirit of the people and, of course, the music…all contribute to Jamaica’s popularity and worldwide appeal.

We got to see this room before the maid finished getting it together, but I prefer this look because you can actually see the size of the bed and the wonderful wood that was used to make it. The mattress was very comfortable as well.

Wonderful Fruit Plate in Jamaica

Wonderful Fruit Plate in Jamaica

The island of Jamaica is known world wide for being one of the most exotic vacation destinations for its beaches, balmy weather, reggae music, rich coffees and rums, exotic fruits and beautiful and cheerful people. But you have not truly experienced Jamaica until you have tasted the delicious food on the awesome island.
I have to say at this point that to me it seems that the fruit that is on the island taste sweeter than anywhere else you may taste it. Must be the vibes on the island.

Ackee and Saltfish

Ackee and Saltfish

Ackee and Saltfish – which is the island’s breakfast dish took me by surprise. Ackee looks, cooks and taste like scambled eggs (and that is what I thought I was about to eat the first time I tried them).
When Ackee is cooked it is very fluffy and creamy and it takes on the flavors of whatever it is cooked with but saltfish is the favorite way to eat it in the morning for breakfast. It is usually cooked with onions, tomatoes, sweet, hot and black peppers along with the wonderful spices and herbs from the island.
Dinner in Jamaica

Dinner in Jamaica

Curry goat is a dish you will fin don almost every menu for lunch and dinner on the island of Jamaica. You can not get more Jamaican than curry goat. It is usually served with vegetables, rice and peas and festival.
Festival is a bread that frequently served with Jerk, but I personally love it eat it with almost any Jamaican lunch or dinner meal and it simialr to hush puppies( just a little sweeter).
Coconut Shrimp at Catcha Falling Star

Coconut Shrimp at Catcha Falling Star

Since fishing is such a major way of life on the island of Jamaica, it is no wonder that items like shrimp (my all time favorite food) are so plentiful and tasty. You can get it fried, grilled and so many different ways while you are on the island. Truly a great treat.
Oxtails with Rice and Peas and Greens

Oxtails with Rice and Peas and Greens

Another staple for the island of Jamaica is Oxtails and Rice and Peas.
Oxtails is a love them or leave them dish and I happen to be one who loves them since I tried them for the first time while on the island of Jamaica. Oxtails are usually served with a delicious rich and hearty stew filled with vegetables. This is one dish I would say not to miss.
Rice and Peas is found on every lunch and dinner plate in Jamaica, (I’ve even had it for breakfast!) and it is sometimes nicknamed the Coat of Arms. It features rice and either peas or beans that are cooked  in coconut milk and spices (in Jamaica the preferred “pea” is the red kidney bean).
This is just a very small sampling of the wonderful and tasty dishes you can get while on vacation in Jamaica. Come enjoy some of the Best cuisine in the Caribeean by far.

Jamaica Farewell  – Featuring Debra Ehrardt

I have to tell you, this is a must see play that is sweeping across the US!

Jamaica Farewell is a one-woman show that Debra performs for a straight hour and a half without a break, and believe me she takes you on a emotional ride, one minute you are laughing, cheering and the next you are crying and hoping along with her.

Debra takes you on a wonderful and emotional journey as she shares her dreams of coming to America and all that she went through in order to see her dreams come true.

She makes the play exciting, funny and powerful as we take the journey with her from the age of 7 until today.

Everyone thought she was crazy to even dream of coming to the US but she was determined to come and she refuse to allow anyone or anything to stop her.

I would say to everyone, this is a play that everyone who loves Jamaica must see and you will truly enjoy it from the moment she steps on stage and take you on her journey.

I saw this great play on Saturday June 20, 2009 at the Santa Monica Playhouse and it was a joy to see.
